BUCK, Lucy Margaret

1860 - 1911

Lucy Margaret Buck was born at Ipswich in 1860, youngest daughter of John Dawson Buck, and his wife Emma Ann née Burton (1819-20 December 1879), who married at Ipswich on 29 June 1848. In 1881, Lucy was a 20-year-old ‘music & drawing teacher’, living at 8 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich with her widowed father, 64-year-old John Dawson Buck, a retired schoolmaster, and siblings Emma Elizabeth 31, who was his housekeeper, and Alexander Henry 19, an upholsterer's assistant, with two indoor servants. She studied at Ipswich School of Science and Art and in 1884 obtained her diploma in Advanced Art Examinations in Painting from Still Life and in 1886 for painting in monochrome. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1886-1908 but had exhibited in 1881 'A Street View in Ipswich', in 1883 two watercolours ‘The Steeple Rock, Kynance Cove, Cornwall’ and ‘The Steeple Rock, Kynance Cove’ and in 1886 another ‘A Street View in Ipswich’. A L. Margaret Buck she also exhibited two genre paintings at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters 1892-1894 from Ipswich. In 1891, Lucy and her father John Dawson were living at 10 Beaumont Street, Marylebone, London but the 'East Anglian Daily Times' of 5 September 1893 has a notice 'To open in September. A School of Painting. Miss L. M. Buck. principal of 8 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich. Visiting master Charles Eyles', but in 1896 Lucy was an artist at Ipswich Street, Stowmarket, Suffolk. Lucy Margaret Buck died at Crossways, Yoxford, Suffolk on 21 February 1911, aged 51, she was unmarried.
