VIOLET, Maria

1793 - 1868

Maria Violet was born in London on 14 December 1793, and baptised at St James, Westminster on 8 February 1794, daughter of miniature painter Pierre Nöel Violet and his wife Marguerite née Becret (d. 1841), who married in or just before 1771. Maria was taught art by her father and was a miniaturist of figures and portraits and exhibited at the Royal Academy 1808-1811. She married James Brook Pulham of Woodbridge. In 1851, a 51[sic] year old, and together with her husband, living at a boarding house in Seckford Street, Woodbridge which was kept by Sarah Amos. Maria died at Woodbridge on 4 November 1868, aged 74, and both her and her husband were buried at St John’s Church, Woodbridge. Maria Pulham née Violet, widow, made her will on 21 October 1863 and codicil on 9 June 1864 and both proved at Ipswich on 16 November 1868, she willed ‘No public auction to take place of any effects which my sister may not wish to retain’. Despite her wishes, her effects were sold by public auction at Woodbridge on 30 November 1868 when Contable's portrait of Frances Pulham was purchased by Revd Rolla Charles Meadows Rouse (1832-1904), rector of Woodbridge and father of Evelyn Rouse. Thus, were scattered about that neighbourhood pictures painted by her father, Pierre Violet and by her husband James Brook Pulham.
