APTHORPE, Henry Campion

1863 - 1921

Henry Campion Apthorpe was born at Cambridge in 1863, only son of William Henry Apthorpe (1834-10 July 1914), a brewer & spirit merchant, and his wife Ellen née Postans (1838-July 1936), who married at Newmarket St Mary, Suffolk on 29 May 1862. Henry married at Thelveton, Norfolk on 28 January 1897, Anna Margaret Symonds (1873-29 December 1962) and in 1901, Henry was a retired brewer, living at 1 Gonville Place, Cambridge with his wife Anna, 3 year old son Henry Guy Apthorpe and 2 year old daughter Ellen Marjorie and ten years later, a director of a laundry company, living at Trinity House, Hills Road, Cambridge with his family and a new son, 8 year old Reginald George, born 22 October 1902. A member of Ipswich Art Club 1899-1902 and exhibited from Clairmont, Cambridge in 1899, five oil paintings 'A Suffolk Meadow', 'Euston, Suffolk', 'Near Richmond, Surrey', 'Fakenham, Suffolk' and 'A Restful Corner'; in 1900 four oils 'Mellis Common, Norfolk', 'Houghton Mill, Huntingdon' and two entitled 'Newton Flotman'; in 1901 he exhibited from Gunside Place, Cambridge, two oils 'The Green Dragon Inn, Chesterton' and 'Ditton Corner, near Cambridge' and from 1 Gonville Place, Cambridge in 1902 three oils 'Billingford Mill', 'Billingford Corner' and again 'A Restful Corner'. Also, a member of the Norfolk & Norwich Art Circle 1898-1900, and he exhibited three paintings at the London Salon in 1909, 'The Village Green, Histon', 'Pretty Corner Sheringham' and 'Ditton Corner, Cambridge'. Henry Campion Apthorpe died at Trinity House, Hills Road, Cambridge on 5 January 1921, and his wife died at the home of her son, Henry Guy Apthorpe, at Palgrave, Suffolk in 1962, aged 89.
