HASTINGS, Eveline Dorothy

1933 - 2019

Eveline Dorothy Hastings was born at Highgate, North London in September 1933, daughter of Donald Pierre Hastings (4 July 1900-23 October 1938), an American born noted sculptor, and his wife Phyllys Clara née Taylor (14 June 1899-9 December 1992), who married at Hampstead in 1927. Eveline's early life was disrupted, first by the death of her father in 1938 and then by the Second World War. Educated at Christ's Hospital, Hereford and at Wimbledon School of Art from 1950 and at the Slade School of Fine Art 1954-1957, being tutored by William Coldstream (1908-1987), Claude Rogers (1907-1979) and Lucian Freud (1922-2011), and obtained a Diploma in Fine Art (Painting). In 1956 she took a postgraduate year and entered paintings for the Rome Scholarships and exhibited at the Royal Academy. She married at Surrey NE in 1964, David Marsland, but continued to paint as Eveline Hastings. Eveline taught for some years and was a full-time lecturer from 1974, becoming head of an adult education art department and was a visiting lecturer at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand in 1968-1969. From 1990, a full-time painter and, with close connections to the Suffolk village of Walberswick from childhood, in 2000 went to live at Fivegate Cottage, 2 Moorside Palmers Lane, Walberswick and later moved to The New House, Church Lane, Southwold. She was included in two Walberswick associated exhibitions at Chappel Galleries, Essex in 1990 and 2000 and one in Walberswick Village Hall in 1999, she also exhibited at Snape Maltings Galleries. A former member of Artists of Walberswick; Artworks East with the Suffolk Coastal Group and the Southwold Art Circle. Eveline Dorothy Hastings died at the James Paget Hospital, Gorleston, Norfolk on 4 January 2019, aged 85.
