Martin Laurence

Martin Richard Laurance was born at Kirkuk, Iraq in 1952. He began his career as an engraver and graphic designer, and studied at the Ipswich School of Art and the Norwich School of Art, attending classes in portrait sculpture and life drawing, before taking a B.Ed. in Art and Design at the University of East Anglia. After an early exhibiting career, during which time he held one-man shows in the UK, the Middle East and the USA, his interest in painting and printmaking began to be replaced by drawing and for several years Martin devoted his time solely to life drawing. By the mid-1990s his attention returned to landscape, and he resumed exhibiting both in solo and many group shows. After the discipline of the figure and the austerity of pencil and charcoal, the scale of his work became larger, with monochrome being replaced with vibrant colour working in a variety of mixed media; oil, acrylic, collage, ink, charcoal, watercolour, and gouache, singly or in combinations on paper or canvas and his work is featured on book covers and in art books and magazines. Artist in residence at the National Trust as part of the Stone Eye Group project 2008-2009 and this work was exhibited at the Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh and at the Theatre Royal, Norwich. His solo exhibitions include at the John Russell Gallery, Ipswich; Lantern Gallery, Walberswick; Snape Maltings Galleries, Aldeburgh; Mandell’s Gallery, Norwich; St Gregory’s Art Centre, Norwich; The Frederick Gallery, Raveningham; Frames Gallery, Norwich; Bircham Gallery, Holt; Gallerie Last, Zurich, Switzerland and elsewhere. A member of the Norwich Art Circle 1990-2000 and has been a member of the Norwich Twenty Group since 2008 and its chairman 2015-2017. He opened a studio as part of the 'Creek Creative' collective in Faversham, Kent in 2010-2011 during which time he exhibited at Stark Gallery, Canterbury and Store Street Gallery, Bloomsbury, London but lives at Norwich. His work is in public, private and corporate collections including the National Trust, Targetfollow PLC and Deloitte and Touche (Zurich).
