MURRAY, Joan

Joan Murray was born at Pontefract, Yorkshire in 1950, daughter of Joseph Murray and his wife Laura née Basford, who married at Pontefract in 1945. As a young girl, Joan moved to Lowestoft, Suffolk where she studied at Lowestoft School of Arts and Crafts and gained her certificate in Art Education, with advanced credits in sculpture at Bedford College 1969-1972 and took an advanced honours degree in Ceramic Design at Lowestoft College 1982-1985. In 1986, she established her studio at her home at Lowood Cottage, Broad View Road, Oulton Broad, Suffolk and divides her time between her own work and lecturing at Lowestoft College. Joan works in mixed media on paper which form a major part of her artistic practice with a vocabulary of a mixture of drawing systems and philosophies and more recently textiles. Her wall hangings are related to the Suffolk coast, and the designs are based on views from her beach hut. Joan is a member of Easterly Artists and has exhibited widely, in East Anglia, including Snape Maltings Galleries; Gallery at the Gildenburgh, Peterborough; Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh and 'One Off Two', The Cut Halesworth.
