NORMAN, Michael Radford

1933 - 2020

Michael Radford Norman was born at Ipswich on 20 August 1933, son of Frank Norman (11 October 1869-11 January 1959), a builder, and his wife Daisy Margaret née Young (13 August 1896-20 June 1950), who married at Tendring, Essex in 1930 and in 1939 were living at Wilburga, Wilburga Darcy Road, St Osyth, Essex. Michael was educated at Woodbridge School, Suffolk and studied at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art. Michael commenced painting full-time in 1970, being elected to the Royal Society of Marine Artists in 1976. An artist-model-maker who works in line and watercolour and has exhibited annually at Aldeburgh Festival from 1978 and has had over sixty solo exhibitions in East Anglia. A Member of the Ipswich Art Society and exhibited from The Studio, Main Road, Woolverstone, Ipswich in 1997, 'Baylham Mill' and in 2006 three items, a watercolour & ink 'Ruins of St Osyth's Priory', a watercolour & gouache 'South Transcept, Fountain's Abbey' and an ink, watercolour & wax 'Dilapidated Barn, Dedham'. His work is featured in several books on marine painting including John Salmon's 'Suffolk Essex Border'. He married at Poole, Dorset in 1958, Barbara H. D. Pethen, Barbara Norman and they had two daughters, Louise and Rachel. Michael Radford Norman died on 2 March 2020.
