Tassie Russell

'Tassie' Russell was born in 1952. Known as Tassie, she studied for a Bachelor of Fine Art at the University of Kingston and the Royal College of Art (Cultural Histories Department) and went on to the Slade School of Fine Art, followed by postgraduate studies for a Master's in printmaking at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts and in photography at Central St Martin's School of Art. Tassie taught a range of subjects full-time at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia 1982-1983 followed by part-time at both Suffolk and Lowestoft Colleges and full-time at Ipswich School of Art at Suffolk College 1985-1986 then part-time 1988-1992. At the same time, she held various positions including curator of Gibraltar Walk Gallery. A painter, printmaker and teacher using a contained palette, working slowly to develop the horizontal or vertical edges, building up a relationship between solid and transparent layers. Her work is straightforward and direct, creating a strong presence on any wall and combines her printmaking and photography practice alongside painting. Tassie has participated in shows in London and in East Anglia with solo exhibitions including Peter Pears Gallery, Aldeburgh; Ipswich Museum; Snape Maltings Galleries and the Architectural Association. A past member of the Suffolk Group of Artists and a member of Suffolk Open Studios and has her studio at The Tithe Barn, Gromford Lane, Snape, Suffolk.
