SANT, Audrey

As Audrey E. Lewis, she was born at Epsom, Surrey on 26 July 1926, daughter of Charles Lewis, a coalminer, and his wife Doris H. née Mummery, who married at Pontypridd, Wales in 1921. Audrey married at Sutton, Surrey in 1952, William Howard Sant (22 March 1925-18 February 2005) and now paints under the name of Audrey Sant. Audrey studied at Sutton and Cheam School of Art 1938-1941, graduating in illustration & fashion design from the Royal College of Art 1941-1945. Under the name of Audrey Lewis, she contributed fashion drawings to 'Vogue' at Conde Nast for six years and was included in William Packer's 1983 book 'Fashion Drawings in Vogue'. She freelanced for advertising agency J. Walter Thompson which included work on the 'Sunday Times', for Tootal Fabrics and on Hardy Amies autobiography. After teaching at evening classes at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts, together with her five children, she moved to Suffolk with a part-time teaching position at Ipswich School of Art. Audrey had mixed shows at the Haste Gallery, Ipswich and Frazer Gallery, Woodbridge, Suffolk and has shown at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Pastel Society and at the Mall Galleries in London. Audrey has taken many private commissions in England and in France from her homes at Aldeburgh Court, King Street, Aldeburgh and now lives in Woodbridge, both in Suffolk and was still an active painter in 2021.
