SCOTT, Malcolm

1935 - 2021

As Malcolm Richard Longbottom, he was born at Farm Hill, Waterworks Road, Sudbury, Suffolk on 18 April 1935, and changed his name by deed poll and worked as Malcolm Scott, son of Frederick Gordon Longbottom (2 June 1900-23 September 1980), a silk designer/textile manufacturer, and his wife Violet née Coles (31 May 1907-12 March 1948), who married at St Peter's Church, Sudbury on 28 October 1933 and in 1939 were living at Farm Hill, Waterworks Road, Sudbury. Malcolm was educated at the local school and from the age of 17, served in the Merchant Navy, during which time became a self-taught artist his work being inspired by the English watercolorists of the 18th and 19th centuries. He exhibited as 'Malcolm Richard Longbottom' and as 'Malcolm' at South Bay Gallery, Cape Town and at the J. K. Tasker Gallery, Durban in 1958, and 'Artists of the North', New York in 1959. He married at Worth Valley, Yorkshire in 1959, Shirley Cook and they had two daughters. Malcolm Scott settled at 63 Eastville Terrace, Ripon Road, Harrogate from where he exhibited at City of Leeds Art Gallery; Mercer Art Gallery, Harrogate and Arcade Gallery also exhibiting at the Royal Society of Marine Artists at Mall Galleries 1988-1989 and the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2003 and elsewhere. Malcolm Richard Scott died at his home in Winsford, Cheshire on 12 April 2021.
