HARRINGTON, Cyril

1911 - 2009

Cyril Harrington was born at Oldham, Lancashire in 1911, son of John Harrington (1885-18 August 1937), civil servant, and his wife May née Holme (1886-23 May 1972, who married at Oldham in 1910. Cyril served in the Second World War being taken prisoner-of-war and was incarcerated with the notable Douglas Bader. After demobilisation, Cyril was a teacher of art and architecture at Giggleswick School, Settle, North Yorkshire and together with Peggy MacDonald were founder members of the Clapham Art Group in Settle, North Yorkshire. On his retirement he came to live at Woodbridge in Suffolk and was group leader of the former Ufford Painting Group in 1987, who held their exhibitions at The Barn, Parkside, Lower Ufford, Suffolk. He exhibited at the Ipswich Art Club from 1 Primrose Cottages, Bredfield, Woodbridge in 1979, 'Watersplash, Grundisburgh' and from The Flat, Watering Golf Lane, Aldeburgh in 1980 'Derelict Meadow, Ufford'. Cyril Harrington later lived at Grove Court, Woodbridge where he died on 28 February 2009, aged 97.
