THOMAS, Raymond
Raymond Gerald Thomas was born at Camberwell, Surrey on 14 September 1930, son of Walter Alfred Thomas (13 October 1889-17 January 1960), a printer's assistant, and his wife Emily Florence née Causer (13 October 1898-1995), who married at Camberwell in 1921 and in 1939 were living at 143 Ewell Bypass, Ewell and Epsom, Surrey, together with Raymond and his sibling brother Walter William (20 November 1921-21 December 1996). Raymond studied at Epsom School of Art and at St Martin's College of Art and, after spending his National Service in infantry training in Suffolk, the landscape and light so impressed him, that when he retired, he and his wife moved to Suffolk. He married at Hampstead, London in 1956, Gillian Emmett, Gill Thomas. An artist and a teacher and keen long distant walker, a series of watercolours of the 1980s stemming from walks in France was the core of his exhibition at Century Gallery, Henley-on-Thames in 1992. During the early 1990s he taught graphics, media, and film studies at Farnborough College before moving to Ipswich about 1996. A Friend at the Ipswich Art Society and exhibited from 107 Henslow Road, Ipswich in 1997, 'Suffolk Church' and 'Suffolk Landscape'. He also exhibited at the John Russell Gallery, Ipswich; the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition; Chelsea Art Club and at New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham. Raymond Gerald Thomas died at Ipswich on 20 June 1998.
