Joseph Ramsey Wherrett

Joseph Ramsey Wherrett was born at Ormskirk, Lancashire on 2 March 1914, only son of Joseph Wherrett (7 June 1882-4 June 1967), a drapery store manager, and his wife Florence Olive née Ramsey (4 July 1881-2 March 1963), who married at All Souls, Langham Place, St Marylebone, London on 20 April 1909, who both died at Wickham Market, Suffolk. Young Joseph was educated at Arnold Lodge, Leamington Spa and studied at Birmingham School of Art 1930-1934, under Bernard Fleetwood-Walker (1893-1965) and Harold Holden (1885-1977) and at Leamington Spa School of Art 1935-1937, under Donald MacIntyre (1923-2009) where he won the Scroll Award of the School. In 1939, a commercial artist, living at 25 Emscote Road, Warwick, Warwickshire with his parents and elder sister Olive Jeanette (born 31 August 1911) and in 1940 appointed art master at Leamington School for Boys. A painter in oil, illustrator and designer and completed a range of work for industry, including the General Post Office, Imperial Chemical Industries and the Ministry of Labour and a number for the United States Air Force. He exhibited at the Royal Academy also showing at the Royal Society of British Artists; Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and elsewhere. He provided illustrations for the 'Radio Times' and 'Lilliput' to 'The Studio' and 'Modern Education'. Art master at Leamington College 1940-1945 and at Ipswich School from 1952. He married at Southam Parish Church, Warwickshire on 30 July 1940, Violet Jeanette Haynes (22 February 1916-8 March 1987), elder daughter of Ernest H. Haynes of Southam and they went to live at Little Bealings, Woodbridge, Suffolk. The author of 'Composition' (1946) for which he was invited to become an honorary member of the Eugene Field Society of Authors in the U.S.A. Joseph Ramsey Wherrett died at Little Bealings, Woodbridge on 25 March 1960.
