Pam Winbolt

As Ena Pamela Thornton, she was born at Wanstead, Essex in 1950, daughter of Anthony Spencer Thornton and his wife Ena May née Warrender (1926-15 March 2011), who married at Romford, Essex in 1945. Pam married in the Epping district of Essex in 1970, Paul M. Winbolt when they moved to Mannheim and five years later to Nürnberg, spending thirteen years in Germany with Pam working as a ballet dancer, choreographer and was the co-founder of a youth ballet company, her husband was also a ballet dancer. On her return to England Pam established a Ballet School which she ran for some six years before starting a career as a Visual Artist. Working under the name of Pam Winbolt, she concentrated on art, taking a B.A.(hons) Fine Art degree at Norwich School of Art, followed by a B.Tec Diploma from Suffolk College of Art and Design. She works in acrylics, drawing, oils and pastels with styles in abstract, landscape, life drawing, portrait, seascapes and water; and her sculptures may be of clay, wire mesh, plaster, beeswax and resins. The founder of 49 & Rising an initial group of eight East Anglian artists, and she has won several awards including The Jessie Griffiths Award 1995, Drawing for All 1996 and Making Art Work, Suffolk County Council professional development award 2002-2003. In 2001 she joined the artist run gallery at the OXO Tower in London being involved in running the gallery and was the gallery's co-ordinator for the Affordable Art Fair. Pam has exhibited widely including in England, France, Germany and the United States of America, her solo shows include Trinity Gallery, Tunbridge Wells 2000; Oxo Tower, London 2002; Skylark Gallery, Wisbech 2003; The Wall, Ely and Living, Wildwood, Bury St Edmund's, both 2004 but, after a severe illness, took time out from exhibiting but has now resumed, showing regularly with her latest show at King's College, Cambridge. She has had mixed shows at Inde Gallery, Nottingham; British Workhouse Gallery, Dallas, Texas; The Art Centre Gallery, Lowestoft; The Ibis, Rue de Bercy, Paris; Gainsborough's House Gallery, Sudbury; Lawrence Batley Theatre Gallery, Huddersfield; Halesworth Gallery, Suffolk; Cherry Orchard Gallery, London and many others. Her studio is based at Wall Farm Studios, Skelton's Drove, Kenny Hill, Mildenhall, Suffolk. An exhibition of Pam Winbolt's work was held at the Asylum Gallery, Building 118, Bentwaters Park, Rendlesham, Woodbridge in May 2015.
