ALLIN, Steuart
Steuart Allin was born at Brighton, Sussex on 13 April 1915, son of Percival Steuart Allin (25 September 1873-13 December 1956), an insurance company inspector, and his wife Violet Blanche née Barnes (23 December 1878-1955), who married at St John the Evangelist Church, Bournemouth on 13 June 1903. The family came to live at Ipswich where young Steuart was educated and in 1939 were living at 103 Henley Road, Ipswich when young Steuart was an insurance official. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1938-1944 and exhibited from Crossways, Henley Road, Ipswich in 1938, two oil paintings 'Back Street, St Ives' and 'La Mer'. A registered conscientious objector during the Second World War, during which time he worked on a community farm in Suffolk. He immersed himself in the labour and community but also developed his painting and writing skills and, after the war, worked in music publishing in London later retiring to Dorset. He travelled extensively around Britain, painting and sketching rock formations and stone monuments from prehistoric times. The facets and forms of natural stones and those carved or placed by humans have a sinuous form in Allin's works, once solid and unyielding but also swirling and fluid, both forming and flowing into the landscapes around them. Steuart Allin died at Mousehole Cottage, Flat 1, 32 Park Road, Swanage, Dorset on 13 December 2002. He is sometimes noted as Stewart and/or Allen.
