CLARKE, Katie Marie

1853 - 1885

Katie Marie Clarke was born at Dulverton, Somerset in 1853, daughter of Isaac Clarke (c1826-18 December 1915), a substantial draper at 15 High Street, Dulverton, Somerset, and his wife Elizabeth née Giles (1827-1888), Kate was an older sister to Edith Annie Clarke. In 1861, Katie was a 7-year-old, living at 13 Market Place, Penzance, Cornwall with her parents, 35-year-old Isaac, a draper employing fifteen assistants, and his 36-year-old wife Elizabeth, both born at Dulverton, together with her four siblings Edith Annie, Margaret Elizabeth 9, Frederick Giles 2 and newly born Frank, and they retained a governess and three indoor servants. She was living with her brother Frederick Giles Clarke, a soda & cordial and bottle washing machine manufacturer, and his wife Bessie at 62 London Road, Ipswich in 1883, when Katie exhibited at Ipswich Fine Art Club three items 'China Vase', 'Motto Plate' and another. Katie Marie Clarke died in Suffolk in 1885, aged 32.
