ARTHUR, Margaret
As Margaret Jean Gane, she was born at Bristol in 1930, daughter of Reginald Herbert Gane (1905-1974) and his wife Doreen née Hannabuss, who married at Bristol in 1930. Margaret began her career at Cambridge School of Art 1949-1950 before going on to Chelsea College of Art & Design 1951-1953 where artists Prunella Clough (1919-1999) and Ceri Richards (1903-1971) were influential tutors and were a guiding force in Margaret's subsequent interest in landscape, she also attended the Académie Julian, Paris in 1955. She married at St Ives, Huntingdonshire in 1959, Jonathan Robin Francis Arthur (1932-25 June 2016), who was born in Wales, and after devoting much of her time to teaching and bringing up a family in the 1970s and 80s, Margaret returned to full time painting, firstly in Kent, before moving to Suffolk in 1989. Working as Margaret Arthur, for much of her career Margaret was interested in the landscape, its shifting light, interplay of colour and the architectural structures framed within it and works from her studio at 'Fortune', Hill Road, Southwold, on the Suffolk coast. She worked in both oil and acrylic and produced work, varied in size and dimensions, and exhibited regularly including at the Phoenix Art Gallery, Lavenham; Heffer Gallery, Cambridge; Heal's Gallery, London; Drian Gallery, London; Piers Feetham Gallery, Aldeburgh; Halesworth Gallery, Halesworth; Woodgates Gallery, East Bergholt and Buckenham Galleries, Southwold.
