GAMMAGE, Russell Victor

1920 - 2001

Russell Victor Gammage was born at Ipswich on 16 January 1920, son of Frank Seymour Brinkley Gammage (3 March 1885-1967), a shop assistant, and his wife Ella Eliza née Rose (16 June 1895-9 October 1969), a mother's help, who married at Woodbridge, Suffolk in 1916. Russell Gammage studied at Goldsmiths College and was a model maker by trade and served as a Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Navy. Russell married at Croydon, Surrey on 9 April 1945, Mary Yvonne Broodbrank (5 October 1919-22 February 1990), who was born at 381 Lower Addiscombe Road, Addiscombe, a librarian who also served in the Navy. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and was a Member of the Ipswich Art Society from 1942 but had exhibited from 13 Angela Close, Martlesham, Ipswich in 1941, four works 'First Away', 'Cowshed, Trimley', 'Farmyard, Trimley' and 'Nasturtiums', in 1942 as Petty Officer R. V. Gammage, three works 'Flower Piece', 'Our Patrols were Active' and 'Low Tide, Waldringfield' and his last exhibit was in 1997 'Off Dieppe'. Russell and his wife Mary founded 'Rose Miniatures' in London which produced miniatures for every period from the days of Ancient Egypt to figures of the British Army up to the mid 1980s. His wife died at Martlesham in 1990 and Russell Victor Gammage died in Ipswich Hospital on 25 January 2001, they had no issue.
