COLE, Ethel Kathleen
Ethel Kathleen Cole was born at Beccles, Suffolk on 11 May 1892, daughter of William Hammond Cole (1837-19 April 1917), FRGS, in the India Service, and his wife Josephine Harriet née Johnson (1858-3 May 1938), who married Great Dunmow, Essex in 1877. Ethel was educated at Croydon High School and Roedean School, then studied at the Slade School of Fine Art winning first prize for drawing and obtained a first-class certificate in drawing, painting, and perspective. In 1911, an 18-year-old art student, living at The Dene, East Grinstead, Sussex with her parents, 73-year-old William and 52-year-old Josephine, and two of five surviving siblings, Josephine Ella 31, born in India, and Frances Winifred 28, born at Brighton. A landscape painter in oil and watercolour, black & white and poster artist, illustrator, lithographer, and teacher. Ethel exhibited at the Grosvenor Galleries; New English Art Club; Friday Club; Redfern Gallery and the Royal Academy. Living at Clifton, Bristol in 1917, Brighton 1918 and 40 Redcliffe Road, South Kensington London 1919. In 1939, Ethel Kathleen Cole was an art teacher, living at Flower Lodge, Chailey, Lewes, Sussex where she died on 21 June 1976, she was unmarried. She signed her works 'E. Kathleen Cole' underlined.
