GODDARD, Sir Daniel Ford

1850 - 1922

Daniel Ford Goddard was born at Ipswich on 17 January 1850, son of son Ebenezer Goddard (1816-10 October 1882), a civil engineer, and his wife Anna Sarah Ford (1819-12 February 1889), daughter of the late Thomas Ford, druggist of Reading, who married at Broad Street Chapel, Reading on 21 October 1845. Daniel was educated privately and in 1867 was articled to Messrs E. R. and F. Turner, Ipswich engineers, and was a civil engineer and director of several companies. An alderman of Ipswich serving as the town's mayor 1891/2 and at the 1892 general election, Goddard stood for Parliament, failing to dislodge either of Ipswich's two Conservative members but in 1895 stood in the Liberal cause and elected Member of Parliament for Ipswich, a seat that he held until the 1918 general election, when Ipswich's parliamentary representation was reduced to one seat, when he did not seek re-election. A great benefactor to the town of Ipswich, Goddard was knighted on 16 December 1907 and sworn as a Privy Councillor on 27 January 1916. He married at Tacket Street Meeting House, Ipswich on 27 Mary 1874, Lucy Corsbie Harwood (1853-1876), only daughter of Thomas Harwood of Belstead Hall, Ipswich who died in February 1876 aged 22, and in 1877 he married secondly at the Congregational Chapel, King Street, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk on 13 August 1877, Elizabeth Harwood Hitchcock (1850-30 December 1927) and they had a son Daniel Ford Goddard (born and died 1883). He exhibited at the Ipswich Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition in 1868 and received a Certificate of Merit and was a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1910-1921 which was honorary as he did not exhibit. Daniel Ford Goddard died at Oakhill, Ipswich on 6 May 1922 and buried in Ipswich Cemetery. He was related to Algernon Robertson Goddard and at the funeral of Thomas Harwood of Ipswich, Mr A. R. Robertson of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and Mr D F Goddard both attended the funeral in 1887.
