COLE, John Fenn
John Fenn Cole was baptised at Apsley Guise, Bedfordshire on 19 January 1835, only son of William Cole (1792-1873), a Commander in the Royal Navy, and his wife Ann Judith (c1794-1856). In 1851, John was a 16-year-old scholar living at Church End, Husborne Crawley, Woburn, Bedfordshire with his parents William 58 and Ann 57 and a female servant. On 26 April 1861, John Fenn's dental partnership in Ipswich with Edward Philip Leigh was dissolved. John married at St Andrew's Church, Thornhill Square, Islington, London on 3 August 1865, Mary Anna Sutton (1838-5 December 1903), only daughter of the late Samuel Sutton of Clifton Lodge, Bungay, Suffolk. In 1871, a 36-year-old dental surgeon, together with his wife, living at the home of his 78-year-old widowed father at Husborne Crawley, Bedfordshire, but ten years later, was a dentist at 11 Museum Street, Ipswich. A member of Ipswich Fine Art Club 1883-1905 and exhibited from Museum Street, Ipswich in 1881, oils ‘Kynance Cove, Cornwall’, in 1882 'A Bedfordshire Lane' and 'On the Cornish Coast, near Logan Rock, in 1883 'Half Tide' and 'Priory Farm', 1884 'On the Tamar', in 1885 'Walton Ferry' and continued to exhibit regularly, he also exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in 1884, from Cassell & Co., Ludgate Hill, London, an accommodation address. In 1891, Cole was living at ‘Northcote’, Anglesea Road, Ipswich where his wife died on 5 December 1903, aged 66, and her husband had a reredos designed by John Shewell Corder placed in her memory in St Matthew's Church, Ipswich. John Fenn Cole followed his wife on 5 May 1905, aged 70, and are both buried in Ipswich Cemetery. His estate was valued at over £20,000.
