HEBERT, Edward Jerram
Edward Jerram Hebert was born at Lechdale Vicarage, Gloucestershire on 20 June 1849, son of Revd Charles Hebert (16 August 1807-23 June 1890), rector of Burslem, Wolstanton, Staffordshire and later vicar of St Margaret's, Lowestoft, Suffolk 1850-1870, and his wife Elizabeth née Grace (17 September 1810-5 February 1889), who married at St Mark's, Kennington, London on 16 July 1834. In 1851, Edward was a 1-year-old, living at The Rectory, Navigation Street, Burslem, Wolstanton, Staffordshire, with his parents, 43-year-old Charles, born at Stoke Newington, Middlesex and 40-year-old Elizabeth, born in London with five siblings, Grace (1838-1902), Martyn Carthew (1841-1905), Elizabeth (1844-1854), Eleanor (1846-1924) and Hankinson (1846-1876), with four indoor servants. Edward was educated at Highgate and admitted pensioner at Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge on 1 October 1869, graduating B.A. in 1873 proceeding M.A. in 1876. He married at St Mary's Church, Ambleside, Westmorland on 3 April 1877, Mary Sarah Carr (1848-19 September 1931), youngest daughter of the late Charles Carr of Waterhead, Windermere. In 1881, a 31-year-old commercial clerk, living at Penarth Lodge, Westbury-upon-Trym, Barton Regis, Gloucestershire with his 32-year-old wife Mary, born in Northumberland, and twin daughters Ellen and Mabel 1, born at Altricham, Cheshire. As E. J. Hebert, a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club in 1885, exhibiting from Endsleigh House, Butt Road, Colchester, Essex, nine watercolours including 'Calais Fishing Boats in Calais Harbour', 'Lowestoft Harbour', 'Lowestoft Smack', 'Brigatine Colliers', 'Lowestoft Shrimping Boats', 'Ormont Dessus, Switzerland', 'Condemned', 'Low Tide, Lucas Creek, Lowestoft', 'Schooner Barge, Lowestoft Harbour'. There are three other watercolours listed under a H. J. Hebert 'Change and Decay', 'On Oulton Broad, Ready for Cargo' and 'Under Way' but as H. J. Hebert is not listed in the index it is assumed that these were also by E. J. Hebert. In 1898, Edward was living at Oulton House, Lowestoft when a Fellow of the Geological Society and in 1901, a 51-year-old 'on own means', living at Warney Hill, Oulton, Lowestoft with his 52-year-old wife Mary and 21-year-old daughter Helen, born at Altrincham, Cheshire. Edward Jerram Hebert died at Elmdon, Shanklin, Isle of Wight on 4 July 1919, leaving a widow.
