KNIGHT, Adam

1855 - 1931

Adam Knight was baptised at Shifnal, Shropshire on 11 March 1855, eldest child of George Knight, bookseller, paper dealer & cardboard box manufacturer, and his wife Sarah Morfett, daughter of John Morfett, a gardener from Kent, who married at St Philip's Church, Birmingham on 18 February 1854. In 1861, 6-year-old Adam was living at Villa Road, Nottingham with his parents, 31-year-old George and 36-year-old Sarah, and two siblings, John 4 and Charles 1, both born at Nottingham. Adam married at Hackney, London in 1888, Florence Beaumont. In 1898 managing director of Ashwell, Wells and Knight, hosiery manufacturers, at Nottingham and Ilkeston and in 1911, a 56-year-old hosiery manufacturer, living at 32 Bridgford Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham with his 53-year-old wife and two daughters, Nina Gertrude 25 and Madge 15, both born at Nottingham, they also had an elder daughter, Ethel Florence who was born at Nottingham in 1883. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1921-1931, exhibiting from West Bridgford in 1927, four watercolours 'Old Houses, Honfleur', 'A Fountain in Grasse', 'Barnard Castle' and 'Early Morning, Montreuil'. A stalwart of the Nottingham Society of Artists, he also exhibited at the Royal Academy; Royal Society of British Artists; Royal Cambrian Academy of Art; Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and over 240 works at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Adam Knight died at 'Lynwood', 32 Bridgford Road, West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire on 15 January 1931, aged 76 leaving his estate to his unmarried daughter Nina Gertrude Knight.
