MATHEW, Kathleen
Ruby Evelyn Mathew, but known as Kathleen, was born at Dovercourt, Essex on 19 January 1894, daughter of Gervase Frederick Mathew (11 February 1842-10 February 1928), naval paymaster-in-chief, and his wife Frances Sarah Hinchcliff (22 March 1860-19 July 1950), eldest daughter of Major Chamberlain Hinchcliff of Worlington House, Instow, who married at Instow Parish Church, North Devon on 27 October 1880. Kathleen was a sister to Doris Edna Muriel Mathew and Francis Woodbine Mathew. In 1901, Kathleen was a 7-year-old, living at Lee House, 27 Marine Parade, Dovercourt, Essex with her parents, 59-year-old Gervase and 41-year-old Frances and four siblings, Murray 12, David 11, Doris 9 and Francis 4, all born at Dovercourt. In 1911 a boarder at a private school at Thornbank, Collington Avenue, Bexhill-on-sea, Sussex. As Kathleen Mathew, a member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1923-1951, exhibiting from Lee House, Dovercourt in 1923, three works two oils 'Capt Cecil Tidswill' and 'Nora, wife of Lieut. C G N Graham, R.N.' and a pencil drawing 'In a French Garden', in 1927 six works, three oils 'November Sunset in Devon', 'Blythburgh Church' and 'The Estuary of the Torridge' and three watercolours 'Still Life', 'The Bridge into Pulborough, Sussex' and 'Nancyh'. Kathleen exhibited annually including two works in 1937 'The Deserted Garden' and 'Design for Altar Piece', in 1938 two watercolours 'Still Life' and 'Adlington Church, Kew' and two pencil sketches 'The Idealist' and 'Sketch for a Child's Bookplate' and in 1944 she had on show two sketch portraits 'David Michael, aged 18' and 'David Michael, aged 8'. As Ruby Evelyn Mathew, she died at 31 Burnsall Street, Wandsworth, London SW 3, on 17 November 1991, she was unmarried.
