MAY, Dorothy Mabel
As Dorothy Mabel Perry, she was born at Tendring, Essex on 10 December 1891, daughter of George Arthur Perry (1859-24 April 1926), a grocer & draper who kept the Weeley Post Office, and his wife Rose Alice née Emmings (c1870-23 October 1933), who married at Bedford in 1889. In 1911, Dorothy was a 19 year old insurance clerk, living at Weeley Post Office, Tendring with her parents, 51-year-old George and 41-year-old Rose, with two siblings, Marguerite Alice 20 and George Gordon 17. She married at Ipswich in 1915, John Hooper May (12 January 1877-28 August 1953), an architect. Dorothy was a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1925-1948 and as Mrs J. Hooper May exhibited from 'Jordans', Little Bealings, Suffolk in 1927, three watercolours 'Near Wells, Somerset', 'Valley of the Rocks, Lynton, N. Devon' and 'Lee Bay, N. Devon', in 1932 'Malfre at Llanbedr, Wales', in 1933 as Mrs D. M. May three, an oil 'On a Dartmoor Farm' and watercolours 'Old Tidal Mill, St Osyth, Essex' and 'The Butter Market, Ipswich', in 1935 three watercolours 'Cottages, Elsenham, Essex', 'At Playford, Suffolk' and 'Old Trees, The Layers, Saxmundham' and in 1937 three works an oil 'Boat Inn, Woodbridge', and watercolours 'At Axbridge, Somerset' and 'Icklingham, Suffolk'. In 1939 her husband was a retired rating valuation officer, living at the Grosvenor Guest House, Bideford, Devon with Dorothy who had hyphenated her name to Hooper-May. She re-joined as an associate member of the Art Club 1961-1972 and exhibited from 'Waterside', Fordingbridge, Hampshire in 1962, two watercolours 'Breamore Churchyard, Hampshire' and 'River Avon, Breamore, Hampshire' which seem to have been her last exhibits. As Dorothy Mabel Hooper May, she died at Glynn Fryern, Court Road, Fordingbridge, Hampshire on 16 January 1982.
