RANSHAW, Robert
Robert Ranshaw was baptised at Louth, Lincolnshire on 20 June 1836, eldest child and only son of Thomas Ranshaw (21 December 1803-4 September 1863), a master draper, and his wife Elizabeth née Beecham (20 October 1808-12 November 1881). Robert was educated at a school at Amersham, Buckinghamshire. In 1861, a 24-year-old master draper, in the family firm of drapers, living at 3 Temple Terrace, Louth with his parents, 57-year-old Thomas and 52-year-old Elizabeth and five siblings, Susanna 22, Elizabeth Gay 19, Jessie 17, Maria 15 and Emily 11. As well as being a draper, Robert was a Captain in the 3rd Lincolnshire Artillery Volunteer Corps and an art collector being the owner of Rembrandt's 'Entombment of Christ'. He married at Quarrington, Sleaford, Lincolnshire on 16 April 1868, Eliza Marston (1840-1925), eldest daughter of John Taylor Marston of the Old Place, Sleaford and owner of the Albion Brewery, Southgate, Sleaford. In 1881, a 44-year-old draper, living at 1 Temple Terrace, Louth with his 40-year-old wife Eliza and their 9-year-old daughter Edith Mary. As Capt. Robert Ranshaw, a member at the Ipswich Art Club 1889-1891 and in 1889 exhibited from Temple Terrace, Louth, 'Old Books' and in 1890 'The Wetterhorn', 'Left by the Tide' and 'Before the Season', in total he exhibited only these four works. In 1891, still listed as a draper at Louth, but on his father-in-law's death on 29 December 1899, Robert took over his brewery company in Bournemouth and in 1901 was a brewery managing director of the Marston's Dolphin Brewery in Bournemouth, living at Newton, 9 Warren Road, Bournemouth, Hampshire with his wife and daughter and was in the same situation ten years later. Robert Ranshaw died at 9 Warren Road, Bournemouth on 16 January 1924, aged 87.
