ROPER, Phyllis May

1918 - 1989

Phyllis May Roper was born at Ipswich on 30 January 1918, daughter of Edward Roper (2 February 1878-23 October 1950), a county accountant, and his wife Ellen Francis née Symonds (11 December 1879-1 November 1956), who married at Ipswich in 1912. Phyllis studied at the Ipswich and Grimsby Schools of Art and for many years she taught art at both Lowestoft and Grimsby and later moved back to her home town to continue drawing, painting and particularly lino-cut printing. Her passion was for drawing and painting the atmospheric effects of the seasons and weather on East Anglian landscapes and beaches, growing plants, especially trees, birds, animals, and people engaged in their own pursuits and pastimes. In 1939, a local government officer, living at Heathercoft, 19 Bucklesham Road, Ipswich with her parents and two older siblings Edna Frances (16 October 1913-3 January 2000) and Constance Vera (14 June 1915-1973). A member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1948 and exhibited from 19 Bucklesham Road, Ipswich, in 1978 'Spring Sunshine, Saxted Mill' and in 1980, four pictures 'Oriental Poppies', 'May Hedgerow', 'Collared Doves' and 'Summer Border'. Phyllis May Roper died at 19 Bucklesham Road, Ipswich on 20 December 1989, like her two sisters, she was unmarried.
