SMART, Charles Ion

1842 - 1932

Charles Ion Smart was born at Ipswich on 21 January 1842 and baptised as St Nicholas Church, Ipswich on 23 March 1842, son of John Smart and his wife Mary Ann née Truston (1800-1859). As Charles I. Smart, in 1871 he advertised as a music seller and pianoforte manufacturer from Station Road, West Croydon, London. As Charles Ion Smart, he married at Fulham, London in 1877, Eliza 'Rowey' née Reynolds and in 1881, a 37-year-old artist, living at 37 Brook Green Road, Hammersmith with his 27-year-old wife 'Rowey' born Romford, Essex, and children Douglas Ion 3 and Ouida Violet 1, both born at Hammersmith. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1883-1903, exhibiting from 24 Aldensley Road, Bradmoor Park, Hammersmith in 1883, six watercolours 'Brentford', 'Old Cottage, Streatley', 'Goring Church on the Thames', 'The Bargain, street scene, Cairo', 'Old Mill on the Thames', 'View of Streatley on Thames' and two drawings 'On the Thames' and 'Devotion', and ten works in 1884 including watercolours 'View of River Kirkley, Devon', 'Shooters Hill, Thames', 'Greenwich Hospital' and 'Devil's Point, Plymouth'. In 1901, a 58-year-old miniature & landscape artist, living at 52 Tyrell Road, Camberwell with his 46-year-old wife Eliza 'Rowey' and four children Douglas Ion (1877-1970), an art student, Ouida Violet (born 1879) an art student, Harold Lionel (born 1884), a clerk, and Elizabeth Sybil Ada (born 1887) at school. By 1911 they had moved to 97 Friern Road, East Dulwich when Ouida and Sybil were photographic assistants. Charles Ion Smart died at Lewisham in 1932, aged 90. He sometimes called himself Charles John Smart.
