WELBOURN, (Jack) John

1909 - 2006

John Edward Welbourn, known as Jack, was born at Ipswich on 6 June 1909, son of Frederick Edward Welbourn (1884-5 November 1918) and his wife Ivy May née Strutt (23 April 1885-1982), who married at Ipswich in 1907. In 1911, Jack was a 1-year-old, living at Constantine Road, Ipswich with his 26-year-old mother Ivy, at the home of his grand-parents, John William Strutt, an engineer, and his family. John left East Anglia for a brief time and found work as a seaside photographer for the summer season, first in Torquay and later in Margate but returned to Suffolk and married at Felixstowe in 1938, Margaret Watts. In 1939, a laboratory assistant at the Air Ministry at Bawdsey, Suffolk, living at Gulpher Road, Felixstowe with his wife Margaret (born 25 January 1905) when his mother Ivy was a widow and a cookery lecturer living at 'Clearbrook', 42 Holland Road, Felixstowe. Whilst working as a technician at the University College of Wales he gained an Intermediate BSc in Zoology, and in 1956 finished his scientific career at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell, working for the Radiobiological Research Unit. Jack and his wife returned to Suffolk where he was a member and exhibitor at the Ipswich Photographic Society and at the Ipswich Art Club 1967-1969 when he enrolled as a Friend and exhibited from 14 Fairfield Crescent, Framlingham, Suffolk in 1980 'Autumn'. John Edward Welbourn died at Framlingham in 2006.
