COULTER, Michael

Michael John Coulter was born at 19 Talbot Street, Ellesmere, Shropshire in 1937, son of Revd John James Coulter (15 August 1909-1992) and his wife Elizabeth Mary née Hughes (20 February 1907-1987), who married at Ellesmere in 1936. Michael studied at Hereford, Stafford and Leeds Colleges of Art. Head of Art at Woolverstone School, Ipswich 1966-1987, since when he has been a professional artist. Michael Coulter's work has a distinctive style, influenced by his training in illustration and printmaking, also his admiration for the artists from between the wars, Eric Ravilious (1903-1942) and Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) and he is a member of the Ipswich Art Society. He works exclusively in watercolour, depicting everyday life in his own light-hearted style, with movement, pattern, colour, and gentle humour. Michael Coulter has exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition also showing at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours 1983-1985; Peter Hedley Gallery, Wareham from 1989; Artspace Woodbridge, Suffolk and Snape Maltings Galleries, Suffolk also at The Comos, Washington, USA and throughout the UK and abroad. A member of the Ipswich Art Society, his work is held in many private, corporate, and public collections, including that of the Borough of Ipswich at the Christchurch Mansion.
