COTTON, Jacqueline
Jacqueline Nora Cotton was born in the Ipswich area in 1961, daughter of Nigel Thomas Cotton (3 June 1928-14 March 2006), estate agent, and his wife Isobel Lois née Steeds (1930-9 April 2014), her family lived at Charsfield, near Ipswich and they married at Ipswich in 1953. She completed an Art Foundation course at Suffolk College, Ipswich followed by three years at Kidderminster College and Wolverhampton Polytechnic where she graduated with First Class Honours in the Design of Carpets and Related Textiles. In 1984, awarded a Royal Society of Arts Travel Bursary to travel in India and Nepal and this trip formed the greatest single influence on her work. She has since travelled extensively and her geographically diverse portfolio is alive with the vibrancy, passion and bold design experienced in India and Nepal in the initial stages of her professional career. Artist in Residence at the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, Ipswich for three years before dedicating herself to expanding her work to encompass not only watercolour, which was her first love, but also oil, batik, and collage. Her love of rural Suffolk shines through her varied works, showing the county in all its splendid diversity: its vast open skies, its quaint ramshackle fishing huts, its wonderful agricultural and rural architecture, and its rich tapestries of colour. She has exhibited at Snape Maltings Galleries, Aldeburgh; ‘From Dunwich to Delhi’ a solo show at Aldeburgh; Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours at the Mall Galleries, London; M&F Gallery, Ipswich and a solo at Greenwich Theatre, London. She married in 1991, Alan Bruce Scovell and she has her studio at Shrubbery Farm, Travellers Road, Cretingham, near Ipswich.
