Douglas John Kemp was born at Bathavon, Somerset in 1939, son of Frank Ernest Kemp (28 November 1912-1987), a dock worker, and his wife Violet Elsie née Claus (29 November 1913-12 November 1998), who married at Walthamstow, Essex in 1939. Doug studied art at Walthamstow School of Art, and graduated from the Royal Academy Schools in 1969. His career eventually expanded into international exhibitions and was senior lecturer at Loughborough College of Art and Design 1971-1993 also at Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools until his early retirement and return to full time painting and in the 1990s a move to Bramford, Suffolk. Doug has a repertoire of characters that appear and reappear in his paintings, prints, and works on paper and his work is narrative with dark forces within a comic style. With themes that embrace retro times, his characters are simultaneously humorous, tragic, sexy, and visually dynamic. He produces work as acrylic painting on canvas, works on paper and linocuts, his work is graphic bold, and colourful reflecting a passion for celebrating everyday life from romance and sit-coms to Chicago gangsters. Elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1989 and is a member of the Royal Academy Schools East Anglia Group. His solo shows include Gainsborough's House Gallery, Sudbury; Gallery Daniel Wahrenberger, Zurich; Star Gallery, Michigan City, Illinois, USA with more recent exhibitions at Mandell’s Gallery, Norwich and RE+New Gallery Woodbridge, Suffolk; Gallery 1, Wingfield Barns, Suffolk and regularly exhibits with the Royal Academy 'East Anglia Group'. He has his studios at The Old Forge, The Street, Bramford, Suffolk. Doug Kemp’s work is enjoyed by collectors in the US, Japan, China and Europe.
