Kate Reynolds

As Katherine M. Reynolds, she was born at Ipswich in 1961, daughter of Bernard Reynolds and his wife Gwynneth Jane née Griffiths, Gwynneth Reynolds, who married at Ipswich in 1953. Kate, as she is known, studied on a foundation course in Art and Design at Ipswich School of Art 1978-1980 and at Brighton Polytechnic 1980-1983, gaining a B.A. (hons) degree in 3D Design, wood, metal, plastics, ceramics and a master's in 3D design, ceramics, from Cardiff Institute 1983-1984. Kate has held teaching positions at St Joseph's College, Ipswich; Lowestoft College and at Colchester Institute and taught ceramics, drawing and 3D, at Suffolk College from 1988 until 2011. Her work is in creating ceramic pieces, which are simple in outline and capture and evoke an essence of a face or head. At times, the images are humorous and portray a character or paired down human image with her other work being abstract and playful using cropped shapes or cut out additions. The nature of the glazing and finishing, using the raku firing process, results in often random, spontaneous, and surprising effects. A member of the Ipswich Art Society and exhibited from her studio at 3 Pin Mill Road, Chelmondiston, Ipswich in 2006, two ceramics 'White Raku Head' and 'Turquoise Raku Head', she was also a member of the Suffolk Group of Artists and the Suffolk Craft Society and has exhibited at North House Gallery; Bircham Gallery; Sutton Hoo; Reunion Gallery; Graham Oldham Gallery; Gaston Gallery; Waterfront Gallery, University Campus Suffolk and Ipswich Art School Gallery.
