CUMMING, Constance Hilda

1872 - 1927

Constance Hilda Cumming was born at Shepperton, Middlesex on 12 February 1872, daughter of Richard Somerville Cumming (1841-8 March 1906), a merchant & tea broker, and his wife Gertrude Lloyd Beales (1840-5 June 1923), daughter of the late John Beales of Halesworth, who married at St Andrew's Church, Melton, Suffolk on 7 June 1866. In 1891, Constance was a 19-year-old, living at Dedham Hall, Brook Street, Dedham, Essex with her parents, 50-year-old Richard, ‘living on own means’, born Tooting Bec, Wandsworth, and 50-year-old Gertrude, born Halesworth, Suffolk and her three siblings, Lilian Grace 20, Alice Bertha 17 and Francis [Frank] Christian 15. Hilda studied at Herkomer's Art School at Bushey, Hertfordshire 1893 and was a miniature, painter exhibiting at the Royal Academy and at the Royal Society of Miniature Painters. On 23 October 1914, she sailed from Liverpool on the later ill-fated Lusitania for New York, which was sunk by a German U-Boat on its return journey. Constance Hilda Cumming was of Hillocks, Newtown Road, Cookham, Berkshire when she died at Ringrove Nursing Home, Woking, Surrey on 20 October 1927, aged 55, she was unmarried.
