Derek Plant

Derek William Plant was born at Pakefield, Lowestoft, Suffolk in 1934, son of William Frederick Plant (4 April 1912-1978), a lorry driver, and his wife Lily Jane née Myall (8 February 1914-2002), who married at Pakefield in 1933 and in 1939 were living at 78 Milton Road, Lowestoft, with a younger sibling Michael John (16 July 1939-2003). At the age of six, Derek was evacuated to the country, only returning to Lowestoft after the Second World War when he served his National Service in the Royal Army Service Corps. A boat-builder by trade, his interest in oil painting only began in his early thirties when his wife purchased some oil paints and brushes for him as a present. Water transport and ten years as coxswain on the local Trinity House pilot boat had a considerable influence on his chosen subject of Marine Art but he also painted landscape and urban scenes in oil or pen and ink watercolours and, having a small sailing cruiser giving him access to the sea and the Broads, providing extensive scope for subject matter. Derek produced an oil painting from the work of Lowestoft designer John Perryman of a Patrol Boat for the Lebanese Navy and went on to do promotion watercolours of designs for two super-yachts for Middle East potentiates. A member of the Lowestoft Art Group, Derek William Plant died at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital on 25 May 2016.
