Derek Chambers

Derek Hyde Chambers was born at Ilford, Essex in 1937, son of Charles Harry Chambers (2 February 1908-3 February 2002) and his wife Dorothy Rita née Petty (13 March 1906-1978), only daughter of Henry Walton Petty, who married at St Luke's Ilford on 20 April 1935 and in 1939 Dorothy was living at 11a Pretyman Road, Ipswich. In 1952, Derek commenced work as a messenger in a London advertising agency and ten years later formed a partnership as a creative consultant in Mayfair. In 1977, he opened a new graphic design partnership in Soho which lasted until 1994 when he moved to Aldeburgh, Suffolk, concentrating on his drawing and painting. He has an established reputation as a fine painter and printmaker, winner of the Royal Watercolour Society, 1st Prize in 2008, and has also exhibited etchings at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, also showing at the Mall Galleries with the Federation of British Artists; New English Art Club; Discerning Eye, Singer & Friedlander; Royal Institute Of Painters In Water Colours; National Print & Originals; Royal Society of Marine Artists; Royal Society of Portrait Painters; Eastern Open-Prize-winner 2003, and numerous solo and shared exhibitions including several one-man shows in Aldeburgh. His work can be seen at Aldeburgh Contemporary Arts Gallery. A past member of the Suffolk Group of Artists and a member of the Sudbourne Park Printmakers and a Life Member of Ipswich Art Society with his studio at 8 South Entrance, Saxmundham, Suffolk. He is the author of several local books including 'Aldeburgh'; 'The Ipswich Museum Alphabet'.
