CALVERT, Alice Jane
Alice Jane Calvert was baptised at Putney St Mary, Middlesex on 2 August 1854, daughter of Nathaniel Calvert, a clerk, and his wife Maria née Carmoody, who married at St Pancras, London on 8 September 1849. Her father died in 1856 and in 1861, Alice was a 6-year-old living at 8 Albert Terrace, St Matthew's, Ipswich with her 39-year-old widowed mother Maria, a governess, with Maria's 70-year-old father, James Carmoody, a retired tobacconist, and Alice's sister, 8-year-old Maria. In 1871, Alice was a 16-year-old governess, living at 19 Clarkson Street, Ipswich with her mother Maria, now a 49-year-old schoolmistress, together with her sibling brother, 20-year-old (Cecelius) Nathaniel, a customs officer, plus a boarder and a servant. Alice was a member of the Ipswich Art Club in 1879 and exhibited from Clarkson Street, Ipswich in 1880, four works 'Household Friend', 'Ferns, Treasures', 'Wandering' and 'River'. Jane then moved to Norfolk and in 1891, was a governess in the household of Revd William Martin and his family at East Barsham Rectory and by 1901, had moved on to the family of landed proprietor George Grey and his family, at Millfield House, Northumberland. In 1911, a 56-year-old lady housekeeper to her brother Cecelius Nathaniel Calvert (1850-1920), principal clerk customs & excise at Hull, living at 6 Beech Grove, Beverley Road, Hull with his wife but in 1921 was a visitor companion at The Hall, Brinkley, Cambridgeshire, the home of the Dove family. Alice Jane Calvert died at 16 Julian's Road, Wimborne, Dorset on 5 February 1932, aged 77, she was unmarried.
