FROST, Minnie Pemberton
Minnie Pemberton Frost was born at Ipswich on 20 October 1864, daughter of Isaac Frost (1809-31 July 1871), a grocer formerly of Monks Eleigh, and his wife Elizabeth née Smith (1824-1901), third daughter of William Smith of Ufford, who married at the Independant Chapel, St Nicholas Street, Ipswich on 17 May 1844. In 1871, Minnie was a 6-year-old, living at 11 High Street, Ipswich with her parents, 61-year-old Isaac and 46-year-old Elizabeth, with her five siblings, Frederick King 26, Mary Elizabeth 24, Kate Hannah 12, Harry Percival 8 and Lily Jackson 3, all born in Ipswich, but her father died later that year. She studied at the Ipswich School of Science and Art in 1878 receiving her certificate in perspective and from where she exhibited at the South Kensington School of Art in 1884 and in June 1883 when studying at Ipswich High School received her matriculation certificate from the University of London. They were still living at 11 High Street in 1881 and by 1891, Minnie was a 26-year-old artist, living at 'Wanley', [7] Walm Lane, Willesden, Middlesex with her widowed mother, and Minnie's 23-year-old sister Lillie. A member of the Ipswich Fine Art Club 1887-1890 but had exhibited from 104 Haverstock Hill, London in 1885 two works, an oil 'A Brown Study' and a watercolour 'Old Timbers' and exhibited from Willesden in 1888, 'A Gleaner' and 'The Old Pilot Boat on the Orwell'. She also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists in December 1892 'Fiddle and I', a portrait study of a young lady in a blue dress and brown cloak. The Frosts were still living at Walne Lane in 1901 but in 1911 she was one of the many patients in 'The Home of the Holy Rood', Stoke Abbot Road, Worthing, Sussex but in 1915 was living at 7 Watchwell Street, Rye, Sussex. In 1939, a 'mental patient' at the Private Mental Home, Battle, Sussex. Minnie Pemberton Frost died at 84 Lower Park Road, Hastings on 28 July 1951, aged 87, leaving the then substantial sum of £65,000, she was unmarried.
