GODDARD, Algernon Robertson
Algernon Robertson Goddard was born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland in 1853, youngest son of Daniel Haill Goddard, a sub-agent for the Bank of England, and his second wife Eliza Robertson, daughter of John Robertson of Widcombe Villa, Clifton, who married at Bridge Street Chapel, Bristol on 18 July 1838, he married his first wife, Anne Marven Everett, youngest daughter of the late Nathaniel Everett of Warminster, at St Paul's Church, Bristol on 13 February 1835, she died at Bristol on 6 July 1836, aged 24. In 1861, Algernon was a 7-year-old, living at 33 Grey Street, Newcastle with his parents, 50-year-old Daniel and 48-year-old Eliza, and his two sisters, 20-year-old Lucy and 21-year-old married Mrs Mary Spencer, both born at Bristol. In 1871, a 17-year-old accountant, still at 33 Grey Street, Newcastle with his parents and 10 years later a 27-year-old architect, lodging at 97 Soho Hill, Handsworth, Staffordshire. Educated at Mr Smeaton's Educational Establishment, Abbey Road, St Andrews, Fife, Scotland and at Durham University, graduating B.A. and in August 1885, appointed pastor at Keswick Congregational Chapel. He married at St Andrew's Church, Chale, on the Isle of Wight, Hampshire on 6 August 1885, Jane Kennedy (1858-17 July 1918), youngest daughter of the late Dr. John Ferguson Kennedy of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Algernon was a minister at St John's Church, Ipswich 1889-1892 and in 1891, a 37-year-old Congregational Minister, living at Douglas House, St John's Road, Ipswich with his 33-year-old wife Jane, three children John 4, born at Keswick, Ernest 2, born at Hampstead and Dorothy, 2 months, born at Ipswich. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1890-1891 but does not seem to have exhibited. By 1901, he was 'living on own means' at 2 Cornwall Road, Bedford but by 1911, a 57-year-old 'director of the business on The Shell Grotto' living at The Bungalow, 8 Grotto Hill, Margate, Kent with his 53-year-old wife and 18-year-old daughter Alice Noel, born at Saffron Walden, Essex. Algernon Robertson Goddard died at The Bungalow, Grotto Hill, Margate on 7 April 1931, aged 77. The author of 'The Great Siege of Bedford Castle' (1906) and pamphlets on the Margate Shell Grotto. He was related to Sir Daniel Ford Goddard at the funeral of Thomas Harwood of Ipswich in 1887, Mr A. R. Robertson of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Mr D. F. Goddard both attended the funeral.
