HUNT, Archie Ainsworth
Archie Ainsworth Hunt was born at Harlow, Essex on 5 August 1868, son of Robert Hunt (c1836-21 March 1909), a collector for Inland Revenue, and his wife Mary Ann née Butler (c1834-16 January 1905), who married at Poplar, London in 1864. Archie studied at the Ipswich School of Science and Art and in 1893 winning prizes for his work. In 1891, a 21-year-old architect's pupil, living at 3 Handford Villa, Ranalagh Road, Ipswich with his parents, 54-year-old Robert and 56-year-old Mary, and his two siblings, Kate 25, born at Harlow and Lissie 13, born at West Ham, both in Essex. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1890-1893 from Ranalagh Road, Ipswich but does not seem to have exhibited. Archie married at Sudbury, Suffolk in 1896, Jenny Ainsworth Thorber (1866-1929), daughter of John Thorber, when he took the additional name of Ainsworth. In 1901, living with his parents-in-law at Newton Road, Sudbury All Saints, Suffolk, and set up his architect's practice at 36 Market Street, Sudbury until 1908 when appointed part-time West Suffolk County Architect when he moved the practice to 51 Abbeygate Street, Bury St Edmund's. He specialised in church restoration and repairs and for many years was Diocesan Architect. In 1911, a 42-year-old architect, living at 8 Westley Road, Bury St Edmund's with his 40-year-old wife Jenny. In 1919 he went into partnership with George Lister Coates (1880-1958), when the practice became Hunt & Coates. His wife died in 1929 and the following year he married at Bury St Edmund's, Winifred Ellen Evans (6 October 1890-1953) and in 1939, Archie was a registered architect, living at the White House, Bury Road, Great Barton, Suffolk with his wife Winifred and mother-in-law Edith E. Evans (25 April 1870-1946). Archie Ainsworth Hunt died at White House, Great Barton, Bury St Edmund's on 4 December 1949, aged 81, and cremated at Ipswich on 7 December, he had no issue.
