GORE, Millicent Sophia

1870 - 1966

Millicent Sophia Gore was born at The Grange, Sandy Lane, Bacton, Smallburgh, Norfolk and baptised on 25 January 1870, daughter of Lieut Col Frederick William Gore (18 August 1825-2 January 1909) and his wife, Millicent Mundy (1847-9 January 1908), daughter of Sir Robert Miller Mundy, governor of Granada, W.I., who married at Cheriton, Devizes, Wiltshire on 14 January 1868. By 1881, they had moved from Norfolk to 2 Lezayre Mount, Lezayre, Isle of Man, Frederick, a 55-year-old retired infantry officer, with his 34-year-old wife Millicent and two children, 12-year-old Leicester and 11-year-old Millicent Sophia. Young Millicent was a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1897-1898, exhibiting from Brookside, Barnes, Surrey, two pictures in 1897 'Bishop's Tomb, Westminster Abbey' and 'Nave of Rye Church' and two in 1898 'Waiting' and 'A Bite'. In 1901, a 31-year-old, living at 19 Beverley Road, Barnes, with her 52[sic] year-old mother and they kept three indoor servants. Young Millicent had an impressive exhibition list showing at the Royal Academy as Millicent Gore 1903-1904 and in 1908 as Mrs Millicent Anderson. She also exhibited at the Dudley Gallery; Walker Art Gallery; Royal Society of British Artists; Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours; Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Society of Women Artists. She married at St James the Less, Thorndike Street, Westminster, London on 6 July 1904, Percival Hedley Anderson (19 December 1870-20 November 1964) and spent the first few years of her marriage in Canada, where two of her children were born in 1905 and 1908. Her husband was a temporary captain during the First World War and died at Villa Bressani, Brissago, Ticino, Switzerland in 1964 and Millicent Sophia Anderson died 18 months after her husband, at 21b Palmeira Court, Hove, Sussex on 31 March 1966, they had three daughters. Her later paintings were under the title of Millicent Anderson or Millicent Gore Anderson.
