DAY, Edward James
Edward James Day was born at Ipswich in 1853, son of Henry Day, painter & church decorator, and his wife Emma née Hayward, who married at Tower Church, Ipswich on 8 May 1849, and was a brother to Harry Philip Day. Edward was educated at Christ's Hospital Day School at Ipswich and at Ipswich School of Art. He married at Ipswich in 1880, 22-year-old Alice Jackman and the following year was living at 15 Cardigan Street, Ipswich but had exhibited at Ipswich Fine Art Club from 15 Burlington Road, Ipswich in 1882, a watercolour 'Flowers of the Month' and in 1883, a monochrome 'Roses' but does not seem to have exhibited again. In April 1881 he made an illuminated testimonial on vellum for a presentation by the local rector, to Mr Arthur Edward Phillips of Groton House, Suffolk and in 1893 illuminated an address for Mr Raphael for the Ipswich Conservative Association. In 1891, an assistant clerk to Ipswich School Board, living at 27 Clarkson Street, Ipswich with his wife Alice and two daughters, Margaret 6 and Constance 3, together with his widowed father-in-law, 56-year-old David Jackman, silversmith, of Farnham, Hampshire who died at Ipswich in 1908, aged 71. By 1901, they had moved to 137 Norwich Road, Ipswich with the addition of an 8-year-old son Owen Edward. His wife Alice died at Ipswich in 1916, aged 58 and Edward James Day followed on 25 December 1920, aged 67.
