ADCOCK, Ernest Daniel

1856 - 1936

Ernest Daniel Adcock was born at Norwich, Norfolk in 1856, eldest son of Daniel Adcock (7 November 1805-6 February 1894), a cigar manufacturer, and his wife Melissa Womack née Shalders (25 July 1824-6 December 1905), daughter of Edward Shalders of Norwich, who married at the French Church, Norwich on 2 October 1849. In 1871, Ernest was a 14-year-old, living at Press Lane, Hellesdon Road, Norwich with his parents, 65-year-old Daniel and 46-year-old Melissa, with four siblings, all born in Norwich. He married at the Congregational Church, Princes Street, Norwich on 18 January 1883, Florence Ilott (1858-28 December 1931), eldest daughter of William Ilott of Norwich. Ernest took up as a photographer and in 1885 patented 'An Improved 'Vignetting' Apparatus for Photographic Printing Frames' about which time he entered the family firm of Adcock & Son, tobacco merchants and, on the death of his father in 1894, took over his father's tobacco business. In 1901, a 44-year-old tobacco manufacturer, living at 181 Newmarket Road, Norwich with his 42-year-old wife Florence and their three children and was still in the same position in 1911. An artist in oil and watercolour who was a member of the old Woodpecker Art Club, later named Norwich Art Circle, and exhibited regularly at their exhibitions and was also a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1923-1924, exhibiting in 1923 from Glenhurst, Eaton, Norwich an oil 'Rothesay Bay' and two watercolours 'Pilatus' and 'Cley Church'. Ernest Daniel Adcock died at 'Glenhurst', 163 Newmarket Road, Norwich, Norfolk on 17 May 1936, leaving two daughters, Winifred Florence (1883-1976) and Dorothy Olive (1885-1961) and a son, Ernest Noel Adcock (1889-1979), who continued the tobacco business. His estate was valued at over £173,000.
