NEWLAND, Cecilia Janette
Cecilia Janette Newland was baptised at Adelaide, South Australia on 19 August 1847, third daughter of Richard Francis Newland (1806-1 August 1873), Stipendiary magistrate at Port Adelaide, and his wife Eleanor née Light, third daughter of Col. Alexander Whalley Light, of 25th Regiment, who married at St John's Church, Adelaide on 14 December 1842. Her mother died in Australia on 7 November 1851 and in 1860 her father and Cecilia returned to England and was of 12 Mornington Crescent, Hampstead, formerly of Witnesham, when he died at Witnesham, Suffolk in 1873, his executor was his daughter Cecilia. In 1871, Cecilia was a 23-year-old, living at Witnesham Rectory near Ipswich with her 66-year-old uncle, Revd William Potter and his 67-year-old wife Harriett, together with Cecilia's 59-year-old spinster aunt, Susanna Newland (1811-1889), she was the sister-in-law of Revd Potter. Cecilia was a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1875-1878, exhibiting from Witnesham in 1876 'Nursery Rhymes' and in 1877 'Light and Shade'. They were still living at Witnesham in 1881 but Cecilia and her aunt Susanna moved to 56 Ventnor Villas, Hove, Sussex where her aunt died on 8 December 1889. In 1891 Cecilia was living at 56 Ventnor Villa, Hove and she married at All Saints' Church, Hove on 10 January 1895, Maj. Gen. Alexander Urquhuart Hamilton Finch (12 October 1831-5 May 1917), of the Royal Engineers at Bombay, a widower. In 1901 she was living at 20 Salisbury Road, Hove with her 69-year-old husband and 40-year-old stepdaughter, Mary Ellen Finch and where Cecilia Janet Urqhuart died on 9 June 1907, aged 60.
