SMYTH, Mabel Ellen
Mabel Ellen Smyth was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in May 1911. On 15 September 1928, she was living at 65 Bunyan Street, Belfast when, as a 17-year-old, she and her 15-year-old sister Margaret sailed on the White Star Line 'Adriatic' for New York. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1938-1960 but had exhibited from 37 Orchard Street, Ipswich in 1932 two works, 'Portrait of H.M.R.' and a watercolour 'Summer Flowers' and in 1933 'Anenomes'. In 1935, a Miss M. Smyth exhibited from 97 Gipsy Hill, London S.E. 19, a watercolour 'Margaret' and an oil 'An Old Felixstowe Farm' and has been assumed to be the same lady as in 1937 she exhibited from 482 Norwich Road, Ipswich, two works 'The Boat Inn, Woodbridge' and 'The Dresden Vase', in 1938 four watercolours 'An Essex Thatch', 'Autumn', 'A Street in Mousehole, Cornwall' and 'A Summer Posy', in 1941 three watercolours 'Rustic Cottage', 'Spring Flowers' and 'Autumn Flowers', in 1942 'T. A. Eldrige, Esq.', 'Sweet Peas', 'Thaxted Mill' and 'The Little Norman Church on the Hill'. In 1945 she exhibited from her lodgings at 14 Fonnereau Road, Ipswich, a watercolour 'Hyacinth', and in 1948 'Daffodils' and 'Dresden China'. In 1951 she exhibited from 36 Quilter Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk, a watercolour 'Anemones', in 1952 'The Green Jug' and from 40 Quilter Road, Felixstowe in 1953, 'Geraniums' and in 1958 from Oakington Hotel, Tomline Road, Felixstowe, she exhibited 'Fruit Study' and 'Primroses' and was a regular annual exhibitor of one or two pictures until 1958. Mabel Ellen Smyth died at Ipswich in 1978, she was unmarried.
