THORNTON, Edward
Edward Taylor Thornton was born at Dalston, Hackney, London on 29 June 1868 and baptised at Dalston on 13 December 1868, second child and eldest son of Robert Thornton, a merchant, and his wife Charlotte Helen née Taylor (1839-1877), who married at Hoxne, Suffolk in 1865. In 1881, Edward was a 12-year-old, living at 9 Moss Hall Grove, Finchley, Barnet with his parents, 45-year-old Robert and 42-year-old Helen, and five siblings, Mary 14, Archibald 10, John 8, Agnes 7 and son Bernard 6. In 1901 Edward was a 32-year-old artist, living at Eagle House, High Street, Hornsey, Middlesex with his parents and four of his siblings. He married at Yeiwsley Baptist Tabernacle, Uxbridge, London on 19 June 1918, Mary Cossey (15 October 1874-1 November 1959), daughter of Revd Francis Edward Cossey, a Baptist minister and in 1921 they were living at 8 Furzeham Road, West Drayton with a one-year-old daughter Winifred Mary [Paice], whose son was Sir James Paice, M.P. In 1939, Edward was an artist, living at 'Windyridge', 2nd Avenue, Trimley St Mary, Felixstowe, Suffolk with his wife Mary. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1942-1945 and exhibited from Windyridge, Trimley, in 1942 two sculptures 'Irish Elk' and 'Blue Bok', in 1943 'Spent' and 'Keeping Cave' and in 1945, another two sculptures 'The Okapi' and 'Suffolk Punch'. Edward Taylor Thornton died at 'Windyridge', 7 Second Avenue, Trimley St Mary, Suffolk on 11 February 1957, aged 88.
