MacKINNON, Sylvia Joan

1883 - 1973

As Sylvia Joan Robinson, she was born at Cranford Hall, Kettering, Northamptonshire on 23 May 1883, youngest daughter of the local rector, Revd Sir Frederick Laud Robinson, 9th Bart. (28 June 1843-6 February 1893) and his wife Madeleine Caroline Sartoris (5 March 1848-21 February 1909), eldest daughter of Frederick Sartoris of Rushden Hall, Northamptonshire, who married at Cranford on 13 December 1870. Sylvia married firstly at St James's Church, Piccadilly, London on 23 April 1903, Lt Col Charles Edward Bagnall, M.P. (1861-1 April 1923) and they had one son, Charles Frederick Rex Bagnall (11 February 1904-16 December 1993). Sylvia married secondly at Fulham on 24 September 1925, Major Archibald Donald MacKinnon (27 March 1864-5 September 1937), a medical practitioner, and they lived at Hove, Sussex. From her paintings and later address at Dedham, she seems to have studied at the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at Benton End, Hadleigh, Suffolk. An associate member of the Ipswich Art Club 1943-1951 but had exhibited in 1941 'View from the Studio Window, Benton End', in 1942 'Dedham Church from my Studio Window' and 'The Haywain, Dedham, from my Window', in 1943 three oils 'Portrait of an Old Man', 'Mrs Hill' and 'Mrs Bagnall' and exhibited in 1945 from Octogan House, Dedham, Essex two paintings, 'Old Fred' and a 'Still Life' and in 1946 an oil 'Purple and Yellow Tulips and a watercolour 'Landscape' but does not seem to exhibited further. Sylvia Joan MacKinnon died at 10 Eaton Gardens, Hove, Sussex on 28 August 1973.
