CROSSLEY, Marjorie

1890 - 1968

As Marjorie Vernon Lockey, she was born at Barton Regis, Gloucestershire in 1890 and baptised at Bristol on 30 March 1890, daughter of George Ernest Lockey (1859-29 March 1913), a wine & spirit merchant, and his wife Annie Florence née Alsop, daughter of Uriah Alsop, a Bristol furniture maker, who married at Barton Regis in 1883. In 1911, Marjorie was a 21-year-old musical student, living at Merton House, Amersham Hill, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, the home of her unmarried 74-year-old great-aunt, Marion Vernon, and her 42-year-old unmarried aunt Ethel Vernon Lockey and in 1912 passed her examination for the Association of the Royal College of Music and played in many musical concerts including both instrumental and singing. She married at Willesden, London in 1916, Lionel Doyle Crossley (January 1893-30 July 1968). As Mrs Marjorie Crossley, a member of the Ipswich Art Club 1946-1950 and exhibited from The White House, Trimley, Felixstowe, Suffolk in 1947, two items including 'The Journey by Night', one in 1948 'Peter John' and three in 1949 including 'Descent from the Cross' and 'Edward Lake Hawkins', but in 1950 she exhibited from 5 Prince of Wales Terrace, London, a further sculpture and she also exhibited sculptures at the Royal Academy. Marjorie Vernon Crossley died, shortly after her husband, at 70 Madeira Road, Streatham, London on 18 October 1968.
