WALES, Edward Garneys
Edward Garneys Wales was born at Downham Market, Norfolk on 8 May 1877 and baptised on 11 June 1877, youngest child of Dr Thomas Garneys Wales (1833-18 August 1925), surgeon, and his wife Mary Elizabeth née Ward (11 May 1832-28 January 1911), daughter of George Augustus Ward of Downham, who married at Stockton, Cheshire in 1863 and in 1921 Thomas was living at High Street, Downham Market. In 1881, Edward was a 3-year-old, living at High Street, Downham Market with his parents, 48-year-old Thomas and 47-year-old Mary, with two sibling sisters, Edith Mary 17 and Margaret Garneys 5 of several children, all born at Downham Market. Edward was educated for the medical profession and married at All Saints' Marple, Stockport on 11 June 1902, Annie Dowling (3 April 1877-1 April 1940), elder daughter of Richard James Dowling of Beech House, Torkington. In 1911, Edward was a 33-year-old medical practitioner, living at High Street, Downham Market with his 3-year-old daughter, Nancy Edith Garneys, his wife was absent. In 1939, a medical practitioner, living at 6 High Street, Downham Market with his wife Annie and their son Richard Godfrey William Garneys Wales (24 July 1912-22 March 1941), an art student and who, as a pilot officer, was killed in action during the Second World War. Edward's wife Annie died at Downham Market on 1 April 1940, when Edward moved to live at Southwold, Suffolk. A member of the Ipswich Art Club 1947-1951 and exhibited in 1943, two works 'Walberswick from Southwold' and 'River Waveney at Beccles', in 1944 'Suffolk Landscape' and 'Near Budleigh Salterton, South Devon', and from Forest Lodge, Southwold in 1947, three paintings, an oil 'Evening, River Blyth', and two watercolours 'Wind on the Blyth River' and 'Our Haystack', in 1949 two paintings 'Boats on the Blyth' and 'Southwold Harbour' and a further two in 1950 'On the Waveney' and 'Blackshore Quay'. Edward Garneys Wales died at Forest Lodge, Southwold on 3 May 1952 when his age was incorrectly given as 72. The names of Garnys or Garneys are sometimes interchanged and are sometimes Garneys-Wales.
