SAYER, Henry

1887 - 1975

Henry Sayer was born on 7 May 1887 and baptised at St Leonard's, Shoreditch, London on 29 May 1887, son of Thomas Sayer (c1852-1907), a foreman in a tea warehouse, and his wife Ellen née Rye (c1853-1912), who married in 1872. In 1891, Henry was a 3-year-old, living at Daniel Street, Bethnal Green, London with his parents, 39-year-old Thomas and 37-year-old Ellen, with siblings Margaret 16, Elizabeth 11, Thomas 9, James 7 and Eliza 1, all born in London. Henry married at St George in the East, London in 1910, Ellen Hutchinson (8 April 1888-1967) and served in the East Surrey Regiment during the First World War. In 1921, a wood machinist, living at 57 Tarling Street, London, St George in the East, London with his wife Ellen and four children Ellen 9, Elizabeth 4, Jane (born 24 February 1919) and Henry (born 23 September 1920), and Henry was still living there in 1939 with his wife Ellen and their daughter Jane and son Henry (born 23 September 1920), also a wood machinist. A landscape artist and an associate member of the Ipswich Art Club 1953-1969 and exhibited from The Studio, Alresford, near Colchester, Essex in 1953, two oils, 'A Brightlingsea Creek' and 'A Corner of Clare'. In 1957 he exhibited from 'Hawthorn', Brightlingsea Road, Thorington, near Halesworth, Suffolk, two paintings 'Wivenhoe' and 'October Sunshine' and from the same address in 1960 an oil 'Convalescents, Broadstairs' but does not seem to have shown again. He died at Havering, Essex in 1975.
